Serving with Love

15 Aug 2015

On Saturday the 15th of August 2015, MCKL held a volunteering workshop called ‘Serving with Love’ with the core value of ‘volunteerism initiative’, aiming to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to create community projects that would benefit society.

The workshop featured several speakers from various esteemed organisations that specialise in social work and supporting developing communities. They were as follows:

Annora Ong, from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in the Education Unit. She is actively involved in Mentari, a tuition centre for the underprivileged children living around the area (at low-cost flats) held every Saturday, teaching English and Maths. She also volunteers at EPIC (Extraordinary People Impacting Community), building homes for the indigenous people of Malaysia.

Nuhan Zainal, Mandeep Singh and Shailesh Nathan have just returned from a volunteering trip to Cambodia, where they worked closely with an organisation called ‘Water for Cambodia’, building, distributing and maintaining water filters in the rural areas of Cambodia.

Eunice Quay and Emily Wong are currently involved in UKECharisma, an organisation created to encourage student volunteerism by providing a reliable and sustainable framework for community service and leadership projects to be carried out in Malaysia.

The event also served as a soft launch for 'Project Lab', a platform to connect MCKL students to various NGOs for short-term and long-term internship. Project Lab also provides seed-funding to student-initiated community projects, and we hope that all attendees benefited from the experience and will continue to play a role in developing their respective communities.
