MCKL Launches Diploma in Social Work

07 Apr 2017

In April 2017, Methodist College Kuala Lumpur (MCKL) launched the Diploma in Social Work (Dip. SW) with the support of the Yayasan Kajian dan Pembangunan Masyarakat (YKPM) and the Malaysian Association of Social Workers (MASW).

The first of its kind in Malaysia, the programme is designed for working adults and volunteers who are already involved in social welfare and human services as well as high school leavers who are aspiring to acquire the professional competencies of a social worker. Upon completion of the programme, graduates will gain recognition as trained social workers and bestowed full membership with the Malaysian Association of Social Workers (MASW).

“The Diploma in Social Work is long overdue in Malaysian society. It provides a unique opportunity for grassroots workers to acquire basic knowledge, competencies and values to effectively provide services to people in need,” comments Datuk Dr Denison Jayasooria, Trustee of YKPM.

At present, the intake is in April only, with lectures conducted in the evenings and on weekends. Methods of instruction include lectures, seminars, case studies and supervised placements, whilst assessment is conducted through exams, coursework and practical training.
