The Diploma in English Literature will equip you with a breadth of knowledge in English Literature through the study of literary works of different genres, periods and traditions.  As you study a range of classical and modern literary works, you will understand how writers engage with the social, cultural and historical contexts of their time.  You will appreciate the creative ways in which language is used to convey feelings and perspectives and in the process, develop critical insights and empathy. While the core units are academically focused, the electives are designed to provide you with practical knowledge and skills to participate in the workplace upon graduation.  As an English Literature Diploma graduate, you will be greatly valued for your ability to communicate and write with clarity and confidence.

Welcome Message from the Head of Diploma in English Literature

I take delight in introducing the Diploma in English Literature @ Methodist College to you. We are offering English Literature studies because we believe it is a rare and valuable subject that provides a foundation for life. Few disciplines affect the way we perceive the world and ourselves as much as literature. The study of literature helps us to explore some of life’s most important questions and takes us on a discovery journey of self, humanity and the world around us.

Many skills are honed in an English Literature class - language and creative skills, critical thinking and analytical skills as well as effective communication and writing skills. Besides, studying literature enhances the development of empathy, a quality much sought after in the working world today. It opens up our hearts and minds and motivates us to do more with our lives.

Allow me to share this this excerpt from a famous poem which you may be familiar with.

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less travelled by,
And that has made all the difference.

-Robert Frost

In a world where study and career choices are often determined by a 'go with the flow' reasoning, I would like to invite you to consider the road less taken. Studying literature can make a difference in your life.
