Surviving Digital Learning: Student Sharing – Danielle Wong

Danielle Wong signed up for MCKL's Diploma in Early Childhood Education programme which starts in April 2020. Unfortunately, Malaysia was hit with a lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and she had to attend classes from her home.

She shares with us on her experience on online learning.

How did you feel during your first online class? What do you think about it now?

I was never really a big fan of learning through the screen because I've always preferred face to face interaction, and I think that I learn better face to face as well. Now, my perspective has definitely changed to quite the opposite because the lecturers have helped us settle into online learning quite comfortably.

What do you enjoy most about online learning?

One of my favourite parts of online learning is that it helps me with time management. I have to learn how to properly manage my time while juggling with having to study lecture notes and slides, doing my assignments and getting enough rest as well. Another of my favourite parts is that we get to be as comfortable as we want because we are at home. We can attend classes in our pyjamas or change the temperature of the room as we like without having to worry about affecting other people.

What sort of learning support did you receive from our lecturers?

Since day 1, the lecturers have been incredibly helpful. They do so much for us from preparing the slides and recording themselves to explain the slides further, and they still meet us every class without fail. They would prepare some fun activities for us as well to make the class more exciting. Also, they are always ready to help us and to answer our questions whether it's about our assignments, lecture notes or even just about our personal lives.

What were the initial obstacles you faced with online learning? How did you overcome them?

The only obstacle that I had was with some of the Office 035 apps, like Teams and Outlook, as I've never heard of it or used it before. It was a bit confusing to me on how to navigate through the apps, especially Teams. I overcame this problem by exploring the apps during my free time. By exploring it, it helps in getting used to using the apps quicker.

Which online activity did you enjoy the most?

One of my favourite activities is when we get to discuss questions and topics with our friends and groupmates. It is really fun, and you get to learn new things and point of views from different people. Plus, you get to make new friends and learn how to work together with people.
