Full Merit Scholar Delivers MCKL’s First Ever Medal

11 Apr 2018

Laura Tan May Chern made history when she won MCKL’s first ever medal at the SUKIPT (Sukan Institusi Pendidikan Tinggi) Games 2018. She came in third in the 5000 Metres Walk event finishing behind two national level athletes. Her finishing time of 29 minutes and 58 seconds gives her a fighting chance to try and qualify for SUKMA (Sukan Malaysia) this coming September where she will represent the state of Selangor.

When she was a kid, Laura spends her evenings cycling and jogging with her family. These activities soon reaped her interest in athletics and she got involved in her school’s sporting events. Her first taste of glory came at the age of nine where she won her first gold medal in her school cross country event.

Laura is no stranger in her school’s sporting scene with her winning multiple school athletic events as well as being a strong contender in the district (MSSD) and state (MSSS) levels. Her achievements include breaking the MSSD Race Walking record in 2015 as well as winning silver for MSSS in 2015 and 2016. Outside of school, she has been actively taking part in Race Walking events with her best feat to date is coming in second for the MKH Kajang International 1 Hour Walk in 2017.

Her achievements do not come without hard work. Laura trains five times a week and in spite of that, her studies were not affected at all. Laura scored Straight A’s for her Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia and is a 100% Merit Scholarship recipient at MCKL. She is in the American Degree Transfer Program and plans to major in Kinesiology.

MCKL would like to congratulate Laura for her achievements and may she continue to strive in her studies and extra-curricular activities.

The SUKIPT Games is organised every 2 years and it is open to all institutes of higher education in Malaysia, Southeast Asia, and Asia Pacific. This is MCKL’s debut in the games.
